As a Canadian, I can be very focused on the events and issues of my nation. I naturally think in terms of Canada and the Church of Canada. Perhaps that’s understandable because that’s the vineyard that I have been called to labour in, so it’s natural that I watch it carefully. However, I am first and foremost a Christian, not a Canadian, and the Church— the Body of Christ, transcends nations, languages, and ethnos, uniting us all with one another and with Christ. This means significant changes in the Church impact us all, borders don’t have any real bearing or slow down the work of the Spirit.
Last week, something happened in a small African country —that in the 90s had become synonymous with tragedy and violence— Rwanda. And that something matters to the Body of Christ.
It was an Anglican event, but something that will undoubtedly impact the globe. When Luther nailed his theses to Wittenberg’s door— he had no idea that that moment would trigger a global shift, and I suspect what just happened in Rwanda might end up being a similar tipping point.
